DESCRIPTION: 
This session entitled, WUSHU - The Martial Way, will present the spirit of Chinese Kung Fu through expressive and dramatic poses. Model: Keisuke Wakita (脇田圭佑),  a champion-level practitioner of Chinese Kung Fu systems known as Wushu and Tai Chi Chuan.   In Japan he is dedicated to spreading the art of Chinese martial arts through his instruction, demonstrations and stage performances.   More can be learned about him at:  https://wackey04.wixsite.com/mylife


 
The poses will be 1 minute, 5 minute, and 10 minute along with moving poses. We invite the global animation industry to come draw with our Ninja Sketch Warriors for 2 hours.

DESCRIPTION: 
Illustrator Ki Innis of Master Drawing Japan and Ki Creative Studio along with special guests will demonstrate figure drawing that will capture contemporary Japanese swordsmanship demonstrated by Sensei Dofu Takizawa. This session entitled, BUDO: The Warrior's Way, will present the spirit of Japanese martial arts through expressive and dramatic poses. Model:   Sensei Dofu Takizawa (滝沢先生), is a martial artist proficient in the use of swords, bows, and other traditional Japanese weapons.  A deputy master (Daihan/ 代範 ) of Tenshin Hyouho  (天心流兵法) he teaches martial arts,does lectures and has appeared in various commercials.

STRAIGHTS Vs. CURVES - 直線 VS. 曲線

The title is a little misleading because "Vs." is not accurate.  Straights and curves in drawing, art or nature are not enemies nor opposites, but rather compliments that give each other meaning.

このタイトルの「VS」は、もしかしたら分かりづらいかもしれませんね。ドローイング、アート、自然界での直線と曲線は、必ずしも対抗するものではなく、互いを補い、意味を与えるものです。


Straights and curves are tools that the artist can use to help create a greater sense of balance in their art.

直線と曲線の組み合わせは、作品にバランス感を与えるために使えます。


Often I like to talk about the watery rhythm that exists and can be seen in nature and of course the figure.   I like to use this diagram of the opposite C's to help expose that rhythm.  Drawing master Glenn Vilppu likes to call these curves a "school of fish", some liken it to "skiing down a slope."

私は、自然あるいは人体に存在する（観察できる）、水のようなリズムについて言及しています。下の図のような、向かい合った「C」の文字を使ってリズムについて説明することが多いのですが、ドローイングの巨匠グレン・ビルプはこのような曲線を「魚の群れ」と呼んでいます。スキーの回転競技になぞらえる人もいますね。

Though it moves the eye to follow rhythm, it has no meaning without its compliment which we can call form, structure or in today's example "the straight".

このようなラインは、リズムにしたがって視線を誘導します。しかし、それを補うものがなければ、意味は持ちません。フォーム（立体形状）、ストラクチャ（構造）、この例では、曲線と呼ぶものです。

These curves here definitely show movement but are ultimately meaningless without some form of structure to hold it together.

曲線は、動きを表現しますが、フォームやストラクチャとの組み合わせなしには意味をなしません。

But see, "voila!!" 

見てください、こんな具合です。

With the structure added suddenly now we have form, context and possibly application!

ストラクチャ（構造）が与えられると、フォーム、意味合い、用途といったものが見えてきます。



American animation studios taught this as "Appealing Design".   Straights and curves working together, supporting each other in design.  Don't be so dogmatic about what exactly is a "straight" and what is a "curve"!  It's all relative!

アメリカのアニメーションスタジオでは、以下のような形状を「魅力的なデザイン」だと教えています。直線と曲線が組み合わさって、デザインの中で互いを引き立てています。デザインを考えるときに、「真っすぐ」「まがる」といった文字通りの意味にとらわれないでください。直線と曲線は相対的にとらえます。

TENSION

When doing gesture drawings, always remember that you are drawing an action or at least a state of mind.  Drawing just the contour or replicating what's in front of you is not the path to making a drawing that has life. 

ジェスチャードローイングでは、アクションを描く、あるいはモデルのポーズに込められた心情を描くのだということを忘れないでください。輪郭を取ろうとしたり、目の前にあるものを紙の上に再現しようとしても、生き生きとしたドローイングにはなりません

One aspect of pushing your drawings is to be aware of where the tension is and not being afraid to push it even further at times.  Figures that are evenly balanced and vertical are somewhat dead.  

この点をドローイングで表現するためのカギの1つは、引き合う力を意識すること、それを強調することです。均等にバランスが取れて、棒立ちになっている人物は、生命感がありません。

These quick drawings I made both have the sense that they are pulling away from their gravity centre.  This tension is what creates the illusion of movement when the figure is actually standing still. 

このクイックドローイング2点はどちらも、重心から離れる方向に力が働いています。この引き合う力は、人物がたとえじっと立っているにしても、動きがあるような錯覚を作り出します。

There is a drawing teacher who suggested imagining a rubber band like tension that would snap the figure back into their previous position.

絵の先生の中には、「モデルを直前の位置に引き戻そうとするゴムバンドがあると想像してごらん」という言い方をした人もいます。

Models in life drawing sessions sometimes "straighten" out due to the difficulty of holding long poses.  It's our jobs to push the poses beyond what the model is giving us.   

モデルを前にした写生会では、モデルは真っすぐなポーズをとりがちです。これは、長い間同じポーズをとるのが難しいからです。モデルが私たちに見せてくれる以上のドローイングを描くのは私たちの仕事です。

NOTE:  The blue lines represent the direction the body is pulling away from its center of gravity.  The ball and the arrow represents where the gravity is.

- スクウォッシュ・アンド・ストレッチは、アニメーションだけの概念ではない。

原始人が人物を描いた時から存在していたし、古典の巨匠たちの絵にも見ることができる。

- ゴムのように自在に形を変えるアニメーションのような、大げさな表現は必要ないが、

ドローイングにエッセンスを取り入れることはできる。

-  誇張にも使えるし、人物の輪郭の明確化にも利用できる。 

- あるいは、人体にかかるフォースの方向を明確するためにも利用できる。

-  スクウォッシュ・アンド・ストレッチは、明確化を助けてくれる。ダイナミックでドラマチックなアクションをいっそう際立たせてくれる。
